The apartment buildings are part of the overall district concept, consisting of conversion with addition of storeys, modernisation with addition of storeys, basic modernisation and new construction.
The existing buildings with eight two-room flats, 20 three-room flats and 12 four-room flats were restored to their shell condition. Instead of the existing attic, a new, additional residential floor was created with three four-room, two three-room and two two-room flats. The apartment buildings thus have 47 privately financed flats on five floors.
To make the flats on the upper floors barrier-free, the existing two-flight staircase was replaced by a new single-flight staircase and a new lift was built in front.
The apartment buildings are located in the area of the ensemble-protected Parkwohnanlage West (PWA) housing complex in the Sündersbühl district.
The buildings meet the EnEV standard. This standard sets clear guidelines for the energy efficiency of new buildings and modernisations.
One structural challenge was the partial demolition of the staircases, which required a deep intervention in the existing building.
All new parts of the buildings were constructed in the original colour and building form of the 1960s on account of the ensemble protection.
