This year, after a one-year break, a pair of kestrels moved back into the Mögeldorf residential complex of the wbg Nürnberg GmbH real estate company. The first egg is now in the nest. Similar to the castle habitat, the animals can be observed via webcam.
In 2020, an observant resident reported that kestrels had nested in a property. As it turned out, a pair of birds of prey had already moved into a window recess under the roof in 2019 and hatched several eggs there. After an animal fell and suffered minor injuries, it was determined that they were kestrels.
In autumn 2020, experts opened the attic window and installed an additional room with a nesting box and webcam - creating a new living space for the feathered inhabitants.
This year, there was particular excitement as to whether the kestrels would return and move into the home, as they had unfortunately failed to appear last year. There have been repeated sightings since the end of February and the pair of kestrels moved in at the beginning of April. Today, Tuesday, at around 1.30 am, the female finally laid her first egg. Now it remains to be seen how many eggs will follow this year. Six young birds were raised in 2021 and four in 2022.
“We are delighted to once again be able to watch the kestrels in Mögeldorf breed and raise their young. This once again demonstrates our commitment not only to the people of our city, but also to animal and species conservation,” says wbg press spokesman Dieter Barth.
Interested parties can now watch live around the clock via the webcam.
