Today, Lord Mayor Marcus König and wbg Managing Director Ralf Schekira officially launched the construction work for the “Züricher Straße Urban Center” with a symbolic excavator push. Five new buildings with housing, commercial space and social facilities are being built in the Züricher Strasse and Gerhard-Hauptmann-Strasse area in the Großreuth district near Schweinau.

“With this construction project, we are creating urgently needed living space for different income levels and at the same time strengthening the infrastructure of the district,” emphasized Lord Mayor Marcus König. “An urban center is being created here that combines living, working and social services in an exemplary way.”

The construction project comprises buildings with five to seven storeys and an underground parking garage in the southern part of the site. The first floors offer space for commercial, retail and catering businesses and a daycare center with four kindergarten groups and two crèche groups. The upper floors of the buildings will house 181 apartments, 99 of which will be publicly subsidized.

Preparatory measures such as clearing and earthworks were already started in November 2024, and completion will take place in stages until the end of 2027. The expected total costs amount to around 77 million euros. The “Nürnberg Großreuth bei Schweinau” subway station will remain in operation during the entire construction period.

“Our aim is to create sustainable and liveable neighborhoods,” said wbg Managing Director Ralf Schekira. “With green façades, rainwater harvesting and photovoltaic systems, we are contributing to climate protection and a high quality of life for future residents.”
