“The City of Nuremberg is investing over 4.9 million euros here and securing the Haus für Kinder am Wöhrder See with a total of 124 childcare places for the future. We are delighted that the educational work here can continue in modern premises from spring 2026 - a worthwhile investment for our children,” says Nuremberg's Lord Mayor Marcus König and emphasizes: ”Education and, above all, childcare are top priorities for the City of Nuremberg. We are creating new childcare facilities and safeguarding the existing ones.”
The Haus für Kinder has a long tradition in the district and offers its services to families around Wöhrder See and the Bartholomäus elementary school area. The renovated Haus für Kinder will continue to consist of six groups: two in the after-school care center, two in the kindergarten and two in the crèche. The aim of the measures is to bring the existing building up to date and to connect the building complex with an intermediate building. This new part will not only provide weather-protected and barrier-free access to all areas, but will also house a modern distribution kitchen.
Sustainable renovation and accessible design
“This investment is necessary in order to maintain all-day education and care at this location. Thanks to the “Haus für Kinder” concept, children from nursery to elementary school can continue to receive valuable education, upbringing and care. In addition, we not only attach great importance to sustainable construction, but also to a sustainable, natural, attractive and appealing environment for children, parents and educational staff,” explains Elisabeth Ries, Head of the Youth, Family and Social Affairs Department. During the renovation phase, the children will be looked after at the Ingolstädter Straße location.
The energy-efficient renovation of the existing buildings includes a green roof, the installation of modern windows and the installation of a photovoltaic system with an output of 65 kilowatt peak. The primary energy requirement will be significantly reduced once the work is complete. “The outdoor facilities will also be carefully renovated and extended, while the existing trees will be preserved. New play equipment, terraces and natural play areas will ensure that the children can spend time outdoors in a safe and stimulating environment,” says Daniel F. Ulrich, Head of Planning and Construction. Special attention was paid to accessibility. A new elevator provides access to all areas of the building, while a guidance system for the blind at the main entrance and a disabled toilet ensure inclusion in the facility.
The construction work is expected to be completed by February 2026. “We plan to hand over the building to the users in March 2026. With the general refurbishment and the new building, we are setting another milestone in the development of modern childcare services with and for the city of Nuremberg,” says Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of WBG KOMMUNAL.
Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
This measure is an important contribution to gradually making Nuremberg more inclusive. It is part of Nuremberg's action plan to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). The first action plan was unanimously adopted by Nuremberg City Council in December 2021. Extensive measures have been and are being developed and implemented to ensure the equal participation of people with and without disabilities in Nuremberg.
