The commissioning of the Martin-Behaim-Gymnasium, one of the city of Nuremberg's most important school construction projects, has been postponed. Due to deficiencies and delays in the structural design and construction preparation caused by external partners, the original schedule had to be corrected. WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH, which is acting as the client on behalf of the City of Nuremberg as part of a PPPI project, has taken extensive crisis management measures to ensure construction progress.

From today's perspective, the new school building can be occupied for the 2028/29 school year. “We are taking the situation very seriously and brought in external experts at an early stage to assess the existing deficiencies and develop solutions. Despite all our efforts, the delay could not be fully compensated for,” explains Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH. “Our goal remains to build a modern, sustainable and functional secondary school that meets the highest educational and structural standards.”

Meanwhile, work continues on the construction site. An important milestone is the assembly of the short wooden trusses for the sports hall, which will begin in the week starting January 14, 2025. As soon as the wooden trusses have been installed, the shell construction company will pour the concrete for the ceiling above the adjoining rooms of the sports hall. The exact schedule depends on the weather conditions. This will allow the shell construction work to continue.

The new Martin-Behaim-Gymnasium is a school building that offers space for around 1,500 pupils and around 150 teachers and will form a modern school campus together with the neighboring Neues Gymnasium Nürnberg. The MBG is being built in timber construction and uses recycled concrete, geothermal energy and photovoltaic systems. The renaturation of the Fischbach stream and the creation of natural spaces for the pupils will set additional ecological accents.
