WBG Nürnberg Beteiligungs GmbH - a subsidiary of wbg Nürnberg GmbH - has started the civil engineering work for the new retirement home in St. Johannis. Parallel to the archaeological excavations, so-called prefabricated driven piles have been installed in the ground since Monday, 8 April 2024.
These are necessary to distribute the building loads into deeper, load-bearing layers. The driving of the 354 piles in total is unfortunately causing unavoidable disruption around the construction site between Brückenstraße and Großweidenmühlstraße, despite compliance with all the conditions of the permit. wbg Nürnberg asks the affected residents for their understanding.
Unfortunately, there are no alternative options, such as the use of bored piles, taking into account all design and structural constraints. The inhomogeneous course of the subsoil towards the Pegnitz also makes driven pile foundations the
only means.
The pile-driving equipment used and the pile-driving method correspond to the state of the art. A noise protection hood is also fitted to the piling rig head to reduce the noise level. Another advantage of “pile driving” compared to “drilling” is the significantly shorter construction time. The end of pile driving for the first construction phase is planned for calendar week 21. The second construction phase will begin once the archaeological excavations have been completed.
As things stand at present, the final three-week construction phase is expected to begin in mid-August.
The vibrations have been monitored since the start of pile driving and are consistently within the permissible range. The measuring points set up for vibration frequencies have been set well below the limit values and have not reported any increased values to date. The construction measure is therefore within the legally permissible framework and all approval requirements are being
complied with.
In order to avoid unnecessarily extending the pile-driving times, the work runs from Monday to Wednesday from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., in some cases until 6 p.m.. Conversely, they end at 3 pm on Thursdays.
