The new building, which offers a modern and flexible learning and care environment for up to 500 children throughout the day, combines school, after-school care and youth welfare services in one facility. The rooms are designed according to a child-friendly color concept and enable versatile use throughout the day thanks to a networked room program. “We are creating a modern learning and living space for our children that goes far beyond the traditional requirements of a school building,” said Lord Mayor Marcus König at the handover of the keys. “This investment of around 48 million euros is an investment in the future of Nuremberg and one of the most modern elementary school in the city. Even in financially strained times, the city of Nuremberg is investing sustainably in education and childcare.”
Education and care for the growing city
Cornelia Trinkl, Nuremberg's Head of Schools and Sport, adds: “The new elementary school is a decisive step towards meeting the educational needs of our growing city. Spaces are being created here that inspire children to develop their talents.
Elisabeth Ries, Head of Youth, Family and Social Affairs, explains: “All-day education for primary school children has a high priority in Nuremberg - because the individual support of children, fair educational opportunities and the compatibility of family and career are important to us. The fulfillment of the legal entitlement from 2026 is an additional incentive for us to expand rapidly. Nuremberg is setting standards with the Forchheimer Straße elementary school: I am delighted that we have succeeded in working closely together to design the all-day school cooperatively and offer children and teaching staff an appealing learning and working environment.”
The focus is on sustainable construction: A retention roof stores rainwater and releases it at a reduced rate, 2,500 m² of roof surfaces have been greened and equipped with photovoltaic systems. In addition, a geothermal system ensures an efficient heating and cooling supply, enabling the school to achieve the Efficiency House 55 standard.
Natural design and innovative usage concepts
“Another highlight is the playground, which includes a large play and climbing area as well as an area for traffic education and a school garden with a traditional Schwengel pump. Here, the concept of nature-based learning is creatively implemented to give the children practical experience,” says planning and construction officer Daniel F. Ulrich.
“With the Forchheimer Straße elementary school, we have created a modern educational facility for Nuremberg that not only meets the highest educational standards, but is also an ecological role model. This project shows how sustainable architecture and contemporary education can go hand in hand,” emphasized Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH, at the inauguration.
Federal and state funds
The construction project is being funded by the Federal Republic of Germany: Based on a decision by the German Bundestag, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection is funding the new building with a reduced-interest loan for efficient buildings (BEG) and a repayment grant of around 3.1 million euros. In addition, the Free State of Bavaria is funding the project with around 16.4 million euros in accordance with the Financial Equalization Act.
