The new SIGENA neighborhood meeting point at Grünewaldstraße 16 was officially opened with a ceremony. It is the seventh facility of its kind, realized by wbg Nürnberg in cooperation with Diakoneo. The newly constructed residential building, which boasts numerous social and ecological qualities, was inaugurated at the same time.

The former garage area was completely redeveloped for the project. Due to bomb damage from the Second World War, around 4,500 tons of contaminated soil had to be disposed of professionally. The new building comprises 34 apartments with two to five rooms, including 12 subsidized EOF apartments, six of which are reserved for SIGENA. Three of these apartments are specially designed for wheelchair users. All of the subsidized apartments are barrier-free, and almost all others are barrier-free.

The building is an Efficiency House 55 EE, has a roof construction with wood fiber insulation, extensive green roofs and rainwater infiltration on the property. The landscaped inner courtyard with playground, underground parking, cargo bike boxes and green façades underline the claim to sustainable and family-friendly living.

The new SIGENA meeting point on the first floor offers space for encounters, support and advice in the neighborhood. There is now a games club, exercise programs, a pizza party and breakfast for single parents. An open meeting takes place every Thursday from 2 to 4 pm. Diakoneo works with partners such as Diakoniestation Maxfeld ambulante Pflege and Seniorennetzwerk Nordstadt for the benefit of the people. “SIGENA stands for a lively neighborhood, the opportunity to get involved and for cohesion in the neighborhood,” says the responsible coordinator Sabine Rabus.

Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of wbg Nürnberg, emphasizes: "The new building in Grünewaldstrasse combines social responsibility with architectural quality. I am particularly pleased that we have created subsidized and barrier-free apartments here without any legal obligation - and with the SIGENA meeting place, we have been able to set another important building block for good coexistence."

Mayor Christian Vogel emphasizes: "I am deeply impressed by what has been created here on Grünewaldstrasse from a former garage area. Instead of sheet metal and asphalt, we now have a home for people - with a lot of heart, social interaction and ecological responsibility. This shows how we can make our city vibrant and sustainable if we boldly break new ground."

Elisabeth Ries, Head of Social Affairs, explains: "SIGENA stands for modern neighborhood work that focuses on eye level and co-design. The fact that this project has now also arrived at Nordbahnhof is a great benefit for the neighborhood."
