The contract between Arbeiterwohlfahrt Kreisverband Nürnberg e. V. (AWO) and wbg Nürnberg GmbH Immobilienunternehmen for the construction of a new retirement home was signed on 14 November 2022. Since then, planning has continued and the site clearance and necessary civil engineering work has been realised. Thanks to the scheduled progress, the foundation stone for the new Hans-Schneider-Haus can now be laid in the presence of Lord Mayor Marcus König.
The AWO nursing home on Salzbrunner Strasse, "Hans-Schneider-Haus retirement and nursing home", which was built in 1965, no longer meets today's standards in parts. In addition, there is a not inconsiderable and economically unjustifiable need for refurbishment, resulting in a need for action on the part of the AWO. Nevertheless, the AWO is holding on to the Salzbrunner Straße site and will continue to provide places for those in need of care there. The Nuremberg Workers' Welfare Association is thus fulfilling its social and community-orientated mission - despite the difficult overall social conditions.
A neighbourhood development was agreed in cooperation with wbg Nürnberg:
A new care home will be built on a plot of land belonging to wbg that was previously used as a garage. The new home will have 140 single room places, a dementia garden and a roof garden with facilities suitable for senior citizens. The investment costs amount to around 31 million euros. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Once the residents have moved into the new facility, the existing care home will be demolished by wbg Nürnberg in order to build additional rental flats for the wbg portfolio on the site.
"A day of joy for the Langwasser district. This is my idea of sustainable and forward-looking urban development. I am very pleased about the cooperation between AWO and wbg for the benefit of the people in our city and especially for the senior citizens here in Langwasser," said the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the wbg Group, Lord Mayor Marcus König, before laying the foundation stone.
"We are delighted that all the preparations so far have gone so well that we can lay the foundation stone for this new building today as planned.
In times like these, this is not a matter of course, just like the cooperation with the AWO.We, with our core expertise, are taking over the property management part and the AWO will continue to offer people in need of care a home in the district and thus in their familiar surroundings," explain wbg Managing Directors Ralf Schekira and Frank Thyroff on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone.
"For us as the Nuremberg Workers' Welfare Association, today is a day of joy.Together with our partner, wbg Nürnberg, we are laying the foundation stone for our new retirement home in Langwasser. At this location, we are setting the latest standards in care for the elderly in need of care and will be able to meet the needs of the elderly and those in need of care even better than before," emphasise the two board members of the Nuremberg Workers' Welfare Association, Ina Schönwetter-Cramer and Michael Schobelt.
