Foundation stone laid for the "House of Athletes" in Nuremberg-Langwasser

With the laying of the foundation stone for the "House of Athletes" at Ursula-Wolfring-Straße 11, the city of Nuremberg, together with the real estate company wbg Nürnberg GmbH, is sending a strong signal for the sustainable promotion of young athletes. Opposite the Bertolt-Brecht-Schule, a modern student residence is being built for young competitive athletes aged 14 to 18 who are completing their school and sports training far from home. wbg is implementing the project and leasing the building to the city of Nuremberg on a long-term basis.

Mayor Marcus König emphasizes the importance of the new building for Nuremberg as a center for sports and education: "With the House of Athletes, we are creating optimal conditions for young talents who combine school and competitive sports at a high level. This is an investment in the future of our city – athletically, socially, and societally."

The residence will offer space for up to 117 residents in 60 double rooms with private bathrooms. The facilities will be complemented by common areas with kitchens, lounge and study areas, as well as a roof terrace and an outdoor terrace adjacent to the central dining room. In addition to three barrier-free rooms for single occupancy, other wheelchair-accessible rooms are also available. Educational specialists accompany the young people in their everyday lives and, together with clear structures, ensure a stable, supportive, and safe environment. This creates a place that goes far beyond mere living and focuses on personal development, community, and participation.

Sports consultant Cornelia Trinkl emphasizes the holistic approach of the project: "The Athletes' House is an important component of our sports promotion in Nuremberg. Short distances to the elite sports school and training facilities, combined with an educationally supported living environment, create ideal conditions for young athletes to develop their potential."

A combination of district heating and a geothermal system with ground probes guarantees a sustainable energy supply. Completion is scheduled for summer 2027, with total investment costs amounting to around 13.4 million euros.

For wbg Managing Director Ralf Schekira, the project exemplifies wbg's role as a reliable partner in urban development: "With the House of Athletes, we are creating a property in this holistically designed neighborhood that complements living and education and is tailored precisely to the needs of young competitive athletes. As a municipal housing company, we take responsibility for projects that create social added value and open up real prospects for all generations."
