Following the completion of the first construction phases at the Uhlandstrasse school site, the next major step is now on the agenda: the comprehensive general refurbishment of the listed existing building of the Ludwig Uhland School. This was decided by the Building and Public Procurement Committee at its meeting on January 30, 2025. As soon as the primary school pupils move into the new building constructed by WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH on behalf of the City of Nuremberg in spring 2025 and the secondary school pupils move into the Piloty School, which is also being renovated by WBG, during the summer vacations, work on the old building can begin in September 2025.

Modern learning environment in historic surroundings

The imposing school building from the Wilhelminian era is being extensively modernized as part of the general refurbishment. Particular attention is being paid to preserving the listed building: “Our aim is to maintain the historical character of the building while creating a modern, energy-efficient and barrier-free learning environment for the pupils,” says Daniel F. Ulrich, Head of Planning and Construction.

The façade design will be retained and no external insulation is planned. The original color scheme - a light, almost white shade - will be restored. The building will be brought up to the current state of the art with new heating, electrical and IT installations, a ventilation system, refurbished sanitary facilities, an elevator, insulated windows and new roofing. “Such a complex refurbishment of a listed building is a major challenge for the project team. Nevertheless, the aim is to stay on schedule and within budget,” hopes WBG KOMMUNAL Managing Director Ralf Schekira.

Commissioning is planned for fall 2028. The new five-form entry Ludwig Uhland Middle School will then offer space for up to 625 pupils. There will be a total of six half-day classes, 19 full-day classes and up to eleven middle school classes. In addition, the capacity of the all-day offer will be significantly expanded. “The general refurbishment is an important milestone for education in Nuremberg. We are not only creating modern learning conditions, but also preserving an important historical building for the future,” explains Cornelia Trinkl, Head of Schools and Sport. The total cost of the project is 48.88 million euros, financed by the City of Nuremberg and funds from the Free State of Bavaria.
