In fall 2025, comprehensive renovation work will begin on the listed old building of the Ludwig Uhland School at the Uhlandstraße school site. WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH is undertaking the project on behalf of the city of Nuremberg. The project will begin with two relocations: during the summer holidays, the middle school will move to part of the Pilotyschule, which has also been renovated by WBG KOMMUNAL. During the fall holidays, the elementary school will follow, moving into its new home in the adjacent new building with a slight delay due to water damage.

The aim is to preserve the historic building's imposing appearance while creating a modern, barrier-free, and energy-efficient learning environment. The project includes the renovation of all heating, ventilation, sanitary, and electrical installations, including IT, new windows, new roofing, and the installation of a central ventilation system with heat recovery.

"Renovating a listed building of this size and function is a particular challenge. At the same time, it is a great opportunity to harmonize the old and the new," says Ralf Schekira, managing director of WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH. For reasons of historic preservation, no exterior insulation will be installed, but the original light-colored facade will be restored. This new insight was already taken into account when choosing the color for the new building, creating a harmonious ensemble of old and new.

“The general renovation is an important milestone for education in Nuremberg. We are not only creating modern learning conditions, but also preserving an important historical building for the future. The new middle school will meet the growing demand for all-day programs and offer space for a variety of educational concepts,” emphasizes Cornelia Trinkl, spokesperson for schools and sports for the city of Nuremberg.

The project is also remarkable from a planning perspective: “The sensitive handling of the historic building requires a great deal of tact and sensitivity. At the same time, we are succeeding in bringing the school up to date in terms of energy efficiency and functionality – a good example of the combination of urban development, monument preservation, and climate protection,” explains Daniel F. Ulrich, Planning and Construction Officer.

With the construction of the new elementary school, which was already completed as the second phase of construction after the conversion of the old gymnasiums into a cafeteria and lunchtime supervision facility, the location will offer optimal conditions for modern, full-day education in the future. The new building can accommodate up to 400 children in 16 classes. Once the general renovation is complete, the middle school will also be significantly expanded: up to 625 students will then find a new school home in six half-day, 19 full-day, and up to eleven middle school classes.

“We are investing in the future of our city on Uhlandstraße. With the new building and the renovation, we are creating an efficient and attractive school location in the north of Nuremberg – right in the heart of the neighborhood around the former Nordbahnhof,” emphasizes Mayor Marcus König.

The total cost of the project is around 48 million euros. Completion of the old building is planned for fall 2028. The project is being financed by funds from the city of Nuremberg and subsidies from the Free State of Bavaria.
