The preparatory work has now progressed so far that the foundation stone for the extension of the Neues Gymnasium Nürnberg (NGN) was laid in the presence of Lord Mayor Marcus König on September 24. The NGN is to be expanded from its current 23 classes to a 4.5-track grammar school (3 humanities/language classes and 1.5 music classes) with 41 classes for around 1,000 pupils and around 100 teachers.
The listed main building was dismantled to remove the parts of the two towers and the 1977 extension that did not date back to the time of construction, while the old gymnasiums, which are also listed, are being converted into an 'art house' with theater, art rooms, a workroom and a library. Two new buildings will be added, a specialist classroom building on Weddigenstrasse and a lower school building on the eastern edge of the site near the sports fields. As part of the construction project, the outdoor facilities will also be redesigned and measures for the renaturation of the Fischbach will be implemented. A triple gymnasium for the NGN and a joint canteen will be built on the site of the Martin-Behaim-Gymnasium (MBG).
The plans were drawn up by BPA Braun Architekten Partnerschaftsgesellschaft mbB, Munich. WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH is investing around 118 million euros. The new and renovated buildings are currently expected to be completed in fall 2028.
“We are investing a lot of money in education here”
“I am delighted that WBG KOMMUNAL has given us the opportunity to lay the foundation stone for the extension of the New Nuremberg Grammar School at this location. This involves not only the renovation of the existing building and two new buildings, but also the second construction phase for a new school campus together with the Martin-Behaim-Gymnasium. We are investing a lot of money in education here and thus in the future of our society,” explained Lord Mayor Marcus König at the laying of the foundation stone.
“At this location, we are creating the best conditions for modern and forward-looking education. In a few years, the new school campus will be a beacon for learning and education that will be enjoyed by many generations of pupils and teachers,” Cornelia Trinkl, Head of Schools and Sport, is convinced.
“We were happy to take on the task of constructing a future-oriented school campus consisting of the Neues Gymnasium Nuremberg and the Martin-Behaim-Gymnasium. For the sake of the environment, we are creating buildings with high energy standards and at the same time we are contributing to the well-being of the people in our city by partially opening up the previously piped Fischbach stream and creating natural green islands,” says wbg Managing Director Ralf Schekira.
