The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone on September 30 marks the official start of construction on one of the most significant school projects in the city of Nuremberg: WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH is building the Breslauer Straße school center on behalf of the city. A high school, a secondary school, six hall units, and a cafeteria are being built. Together with the vocational high school (BON), which is already under construction, a modern school campus for around 2,600 students and around 240 teachers is scheduled to open in the 2028/29 school year.
The new educational facility in the Langwasser district is being built on the former site of the Prinovis printing plant. With a total investment volume of around €178 million and a gross floor area of over 32,000 square meters, the project sets new standards for school buildings in Bavaria.
“Even in financially challenging times, education and childcare remain top priorities. Investing in education is investing in the future of our city. With the school campus on Breslauer Straße, we are creating an efficient, diverse, and architecturally outstanding center for the education of our children and young people,” explained Mayor Marcus König at the groundbreaking ceremony.
The campus comprises a five-stream grammar school for around 1,150 pupils and a five-stream secondary school for 780 pupils. At its heart is the so-called campus band, which acts as a connecting element between the various school buildings. Two combined three-court sports halls and a centrally located cafeteria for 294 people complement the ensemble with outdoor sports areas on the nearby grounds of VfL Nürnberg.
Architecturally, the project focuses on clear addresses along Breslauer Straße and open, interconnected spaces inside the campus. The design is by Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), and the implementation is being carried out by Goldbeck Ost GmbH as the general contractor.
"The Breslauer Straße school campus is creating a learning and living space that perfectly combines the requirements of a modern educational institution. Open structures, short distances, and diverse meeting spaces not only promote teaching but also encourage interaction. In this way, we are creating a place where students can flourish and where the school becomes a central element of the neighborhood. This is possible above all thanks to the cooperation with VfL Nürnberg, for which we are very grateful, as the necessary outdoor sports facilities are being built on its grounds," says school representative Cornelia Trinkl.
The project is being implemented through a public-public partnership (ÖÖP) agreement with the city of Nuremberg. WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH is responsible for planning, construction, financing, and 25 years of management. The building permit was granted on September 11, 2025, foundation and drainage work has been completed, and the first supports are in place. “In times of tight budgets, investing €177.7 million in a single education project is not a matter of course. But every euro is well spent. The Breslauer Straße campus is a promise to the younger generation and a flagship project for our city,” emphasizes City Treasurer Thorsten Brehm.
wbg Managing Director Ralf Schekira is also delighted: “We are proud to have been entrusted with the implementation of this ambitious project. The scale, the depth of planning, and the urban significance make this one of the most challenging—but also most impressive—projects in our history.” The school campus on Breslauer Straße will not only create a new educational location, but also a place that will shape the identity of the entire Langwasser district – open, connected, functional, and future-proof.
