A multifunctional building complex with a three-group after-school care center for 75 children, a modern single sports hall and additional specialist rooms for the Fischbach elementary school is being built at Fischbacher Hauptstraße 118. WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH is realizing the project on behalf of the City of Nuremberg. The foundation stone was laid on Friday, November 14, 2025 with Lord Mayor Marcus König, Head of Schools Cornelia Trinkl, Head of Youth, Family and Social Affairs Elisabeth Ries, Head of Planning and Construction Daniel F. Ulrich and Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH.
"A showcase project for education and childcare is being built here in Fischbach," emphasized Lord Mayor Marcus König. "We are investing in modern education and childcare facilities as well as a sustainable and climate-friendly infrastructure. The entire complex meets the growing requirements and strengthens the quality of life on site - for children, families and clubs alike. Despite our tight financial situation, we are continuously investing in education and childcare. In this way, we are creating the best opportunities for all children in our city."
With a gross floor area of around 2,800 square meters, the new building combines various usage units in a compact, two-storey structure. This will be built in the southern area of the existing school site and is based on the existing school structure. The existing sports hall can continue to be used during the entire construction phase. All parts of the building are barrier-free, an elevator provides access to the upper floor and disabled toilets are provided on both levels.
Outside of school hours, the new sports hall can also be used by local sports clubs. In addition, the public playground will be equipped with new play equipment and the school's outdoor sports facilities will be renovated. Once the new building is operational, the existing sports hall will be dismantled and replaced by an all-weather school pitch. School officer Cornelia Trinkl emphasizes: "The combination of additional school space and a modern sports hall in a barrier-free building is a great benefit for Fischbach. This creates a place of learning and living that enables educational diversity and is also perfectly tailored to the needs of the children."
The after-school care center offers a modern room structure that supports the after-school pedagogy and offers the children potential for development and growth. In addition to the group rooms and a dining room, there is also an exercise room and a creative workroom. The after-school care center will operate as an independent educational facility. Elisabeth Ries, Head of Youth, Family and Social Affairs, emphasizes: "With the new after-school care centre, we are creating a reliable service close to home and promoting cooperation in the district. The rooms stand for participation and a lively neighborhood - a benefit for families and children alike."
The new building meets the requirements of an efficiency building 40, with a central ventilation system with heat recovery in conjunction with a large-scale photovoltaic system on the green roof providing additional energy from renewable sources. "Today, climate protection and energy efficiency are integral parts of modern school buildings," explains Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH. "The project in Fischbach shows that sustainable construction and functional architecture go hand in hand."
Daniel F. Ulrich, Head of Planning and Construction, also emphasizes: "With this future-oriented construction project, the city of Nuremberg is making a targeted investment in the education and care infrastructure in the Fischbach district and at the same time sending a clear signal for sustainable construction in the municipal sector." The total gross investment for the project amounts to around 16 million euros. The Free State of Bavaria has promised around five million euros in funding in accordance with Article 10 of the Bavarian Financial Equalization Act. In addition, funding of around 560,000 euros is expected from the state funding program for all-day expansion. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2025 and be completed by the end of December 2027.
With the opening of the new day nursery, the "after-school emergency program" implemented in Fischbach can come to an end. The "Hort-Notprogramm" is a measure of the Nuremberg Action Plan to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
