A new four-group daycare center will be built at Lortzingstraße 8 and 10 in the coming years, significantly strengthening childcare provision in the Eberhardshof district. WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH is constructing the new building on behalf of the City of Nuremberg. The total cost is around €6.6 million. The foundation stone was laid today, Tuesday, January 20, 2026, by Mayor Marcus König, Elisabeth Ries, City Councilor for Youth, Family, and Social Affairs, Daniel F. Ulrich, City Councilor for Planning and Construction, and Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH.

Mayor Marcus König emphasizes: "Childcare is a priority for us. We are continuing to create high-quality childcare places and sustainably expanding the infrastructure for children. Here, we are creating spaces for children where they will feel comfortable, learn something, and experience community." The daycare center will offer 74 places in the future – 24 nursery places and 50 kindergarten places in two groups each – replacing the dilapidated existing buildings from 1926 and 1970.

“With the daycare center on Lortzingstraße, we are creating urgently needed childcare places in a growing district – and we are doing so with a high degree of urban sensitivity,” emphasizes Planning and Construction Officer Daniel F. Ulrich. “The building blends in with its historic surroundings and offers a high-quality play area in the inner courtyard, which is protected and at the same time very attractively designed.”

With its clear design language, gabled roof, and finely tuned proportions, the compact new building blends harmoniously into the historic ensemble. At the same time, it meets modern requirements for accessibility, safety, education, and energy efficiency. The bright group rooms face an outdoor play area measuring around 885 square meters, which offers a wide range of opportunities for fun and exercise with a climbing and play combination, a nest swing, a mud table, a slide, balancing elements, a Bobby Car track, and green retreat areas.

Social affairs officer Elisabeth Ries emphasizes the added value for families: “The new daycare center not only offers more places, but also excellent educational conditions. Barrier-free access, modern functional rooms, and spacious outdoor play areas create an ideal learning and living environment for the children. With this investment, we are easing the burden on families in Eberhardshof and strengthening the social infrastructure in the district.”

The new building meets the criteria for a climate-positive building and relies on sustainable technology with an air-water heat pump and a photovoltaic system with around 24 kilowatts peak. “We are building a daycare center for the city that is ecologically, functionally, and economically sustainable,” explains wbg Managing Director Ralf Schekira. “At the same time, we are making optimal use of the property: on the northern part of the site, we are developing living space for trainees, which will further enhance the location.”

The existing buildings have already been demolished. Construction of the shell began in December, with interior work to follow in fall 2026. According to current plans, the exterior facilities will be completed by June 2027. The daycare center is scheduled to open in September 2027.

The Free State of Bavaria is contributing around €2.1 million to the total costs under the Fiscal Equalization Act. In addition, the federal government is supporting the project with a KfW grant of €67,350 for the climate-friendly new building.
