The Construction and Procurement Committee gave the green light on Thursday, January 30, 2025, for the construction of a modern triple sports hall on Parlerstraße in the Wetzendorf district. WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH is planning the project on behalf of the City of Nuremberg.

The sports hall will primarily serve the nearby Forchheimer Straße Elementary School for physical education. "With this sports hall, we are not only creating ideal conditions for school sports but also providing an additional facility for club and recreational sports," said Cornelia Trinkl, Head of the Department for Schools and Sports. "The building will be constructed on land leased by the city to TSV Johannis 1883 Nürnberg e.V. As part of the project, these areas will be partially modernized and redesigned," added Daniel F. Ulrich, Head of Urban Planning and Construction.

Space for around 200 spectators

The new sports hall will be built as a compact, functional structure with a wooden façade. A photovoltaic system on the roof and an air-to-water heat pump will ensure a sustainable energy supply. To minimize noise pollution for the planned residential area to the north, special attention will be given to soundproofing. The building is designed to be fully accessible and will feature a spectator stand with a capacity of up to 200 people.

Flexible apace for various sports

Thanks to flexible partition curtains, the sports hall can be divided into three separate sections, allowing for parallel use by different sports such as handball, basketball, badminton, volleyball, or gymnastics. Additionally, a gymnastics room will be built on the upper floor.

The estimated total cost of the project is €20.6 million. As of now, construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2025, with completion and commissioning of the sports hall planned for the end of 2028. However, the timeline may be subject to change due to necessary archaeological investigations.
