For many years, the City of Nuremberg has attached great importance to investments in education. The location of the Henry-Dunant-Schule is now also being further developed and reorganised. The school will be getting a new replacement building in the coming years.
In recent months, WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH was commissioned by the City of Nuremberg to erect an interim building with classrooms for the primary school and rooms for an after-school group in the existing schoolyard. This interim building was occupied in the summer holidays of 2022 and has been in use ever since. The facility will be dismantled again once all the construction work has been completed. Furthermore, an existing school pavilion is currently being demolished, as it is partially located in the construction area of the new building.
Despite sensitive planning for the new replacement building aimed at preserving the trees, some tree clearing and felling work is necessary and will start soon in preparation for the construction work. Several trees and shrubs will be affected, and replacement plantings will be made on the school grounds as part of the construction of the outdoor facilities after all work has been completed.
The existing two-group kindergarten in the single-storey building on Elsa-Brändström-Straße is in need of renovation and no longer meets current educational requirements. It will thus be replaced by a new building on Erasmus-Strasse 13 with four kindergarten groups. An additional preparatory school (“Schulvorbereitende Einrichtung”, SVE) with four groups for up to 40 children complements the kindergarten and is also intended to support children with special educational needs in a shared building. The kindergarten and SVE will cooperate closely and enable the implementation of a model project for “all-day SVE”. Construction work is expected to begin in March 2023, and completion is currently scheduled for December 2024.
“In the future, the joint building will provide an inclusive offer of all-day education, care and upbringing together for children from the kindergarten and the pre-school facility in a multi-professional team. The result is an integrated, innovative and forward-looking model that will help to make education in Nuremberg more inclusive starting in the early years,” says Elisabeth Ries, Nuremberg’s Councillor for Youth, Family and Social Affairs.
Work on the new building for the Henry-Dunant-Schule, which will be constructed on the school property on Erasmusstraße, is expected to begin in June. The new school will be a five-room primary school with 20 classes and 300 all-day places. The combined facility is an after-school care centre in an integrated design with synergetic use of school rooms in the afternoon. The building also includes a two-part sports hall.
“The new sports hall will create capacity for the pupils to exercise as well as for our sports-loving Nurembergers. The construction of the new school building will facilitate contemporary, competence-oriented learning and work for all of our learners, now and in the future. In addition, the combined design for teaching and care makes the building an all-day living space for the children,” says school and sports representative Cornelia Trinkl.
Together with the existing after-school care centres in the surrounding area, there will be sufficient after-school care places for the children of the Henry-Dunant-Schule in the long term.
After the Henry-Dunant-Schule has moved into the new building, the plan is to build flats on the site that will then be vacated by the school. A public green space will be created between the new primary school building and the future residential buildings, including a public playground.

From the current perspective, the day-care centre will be completed in December 2024, and the new primary school will start operating in the school year 2025/2026. The City of Nuremberg is investing around €60.5 million for the overall development at this location. After the two new buildings are completed, the old day-care centre and the old school building will be successively demolished. The construction of a public green space with a public playground is expected to take place in 2026.

This project makes an important contribution to gradually making Nuremberg more inclusive. It is part of the Nuremberg Action Plan for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). The First Action Plan was unanimously adopted by the Nuremberg City Council in December 2021.
