On Friday, June 12, 2026, the comprehensive renovation of the historic, landmark-protected building of the Ludwig-Uhland-Schule on Uhlandstraße will begin. WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH is carrying out the project on behalf of the City of Nuremberg. Once the middle school has moved into the renovated Pilotyschule and the elementary school has moved into the adjacent new building, work will begin on the historic school building dating from the founding era. The new five-track middle school will then accommodate up to 625 students. The plan calls for six half-day classes, 19 full-day classes, and up to eleven classes preparing students for the Mittlere Reife exam.

“With the comprehensive renovation of the Ludwig-Uhland-Schule, we are making a targeted investment in the future of Nuremberg’s educational landscape. The result will be a modern and high-performing school campus that simultaneously preserves the historic character of this special building,” explains Mayor Marcus König. Built in 1908, the historic building has shaped the cityscape in northern Nuremberg for more than a century with its graphic Art Nouveau design, striking gables, and generous window areas. The goal of the comprehensive renovation is to permanently preserve the historic structure while creating a modern, accessible, and energy-efficient learning environment. Completion of the renovated historic building is scheduled for fall 2028.

The project was planned in accordance with the city’s guidelines for energy-efficient and sustainable construction: The entire heating, ventilation, plumbing, and electrical systems—including IT infrastructure—will be replaced; new windows will be installed; and the roof surfaces will be completely re-roofed. Interior insulation and external sunshades are also planned. In addition, the building will be equipped with a central ventilation system featuring heat recovery. The historic façade design will be preserved and restored in accordance with preservation guidelines. “For generations, the Ludwig Uhland School has been an important place of learning and community in northern Nuremberg. With this renovation, we are preserving a building that defines our identity while simultaneously creating the best possible conditions for future generations of students,” emphasizes Dr. Nasser Ahmed, Mayor for Housing, Construction, and Urban Development.

The original light color scheme will also be restored. In addition, greenery will be added to the facade using trellises. The building will continue to be heated via district heating. A particular challenge is the renovation of the historic reinforced concrete ribbed ceilings. Based on extensive investigations, these will be repaired and structurally reinforced. In the future, the old building will house, among other things, new specialized classrooms, modern teaching areas, and spacious all-day learning spaces. The elementary school is already operating in the adjacent new building. “The demands placed on modern schools have changed significantly in recent years. With this comprehensive renovation, we are creating contemporary learning spaces that enable pedagogical diversity and meet the needs of modern school life,” says Cornelia Trinkl, Education Officer.

The outdoor facilities will also be completely redesigned. Plans include activity and relaxation areas for different age groups, a new all-weather playground, play and fitness facilities, and a traffic training area. The existing tree population will be largely preserved. The historic tower clock, dating from 1910, will be restored and technically overhauled. At the same time, the roof surfaces, including the towers, will be renovated. “A comprehensive renovation of this scale on a historic school building requires great care and close cooperation among all parties involved. Our goal is to carefully modernize the historic structure while creating a sustainable and functional learning environment for future generations,” emphasizes Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH. The total cost of the project amounts to approximately 48.9 million euros.
