Start of construction of new Ludwig-Uhland-Grundschule

On behalf of the City of Nuremberg, WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH is constructing a 4-grade primary school on the grounds of Ludwig-Uhland-Schule, Uhlandstraße 33. Construction work began on 26 January 2023. The building serves to expand the existing primary and secondary school and to round off the existing primary school branch. After completion, a total of around 400 children will be taught in 16 classes.

Three more trees will be felled at the beginning of the work. After completion of the construction work, numerous trees will be replanted on the school grounds as replacements in the course of redesigning the outdoor area.

The new building design in the south-western area of the school grounds envisages a four-storey construction plus attic with a flat slope, while preserving the tree population in the southern part of the schoolyard as far as possible. To minimise the impact on the existing trees, no basement will be built. Instead, a 5th floor will be constructed as an attic for building services and subordinate rooms in keeping with the existing listed building.

On the south side, the building follows the alignment of the existing school and swings towards the alignment of the residential buildings to the west. The main entrance faces south towards Grolandstraße, and there is another entrance to the schoolyard to the north.

An existing railway carriage, currently used as a student café by the secondary school, was moved to the northern area of the schoolyard as part of a preliminary measure.

From the current perspective, the new primary school is expected to be completed by the turn of the year 2024/2025. The City of Nuremberg is investing approximately €24 million in the new school.

“The new primary school building on the school grounds will provide both the primary school and the secondary school with pedagogically appropriate classrooms and state-of-the-art specialised rooms. This will create a school location that is future-ready for all pupils,” says school officer Cornelia Trinkl happily.

“The planning to be realised at this location makes it clear how important the preservation of valuable and old trees is in the City of Nuremberg. We have creatively structured the planning so that we can preserve almost all of the trees,” explains City Councillor for Planning and Building Daniel F. Ulrich.

The Ludwig-Uhland-Schule, which is responsible for us, is located in the middle of our Nordbahnhof core housing complex. That’s why we were very happy to accept the order to redesign the school area and then build a new primary school,” explains Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH, on the occasion of the start of the preparatory work.
