WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH will begin construction of the ten-group facility on behalf of the City of Nuremberg in January 2025. Completion is planned for November 2026, meaning that the daycare center will be able to offer space for a total of 250 children from the 2027/28 school year - 150 after-school and 100 kindergarten places.
“The fire was a devastating setback for the expansion of all-day education and childcare and hit everyone involved hard. This makes it all the more important that we are now getting a fresh start: with the reconstruction, we can create urgently needed places for families in Nordstadt and realize our original goal of a modern and sustainable daycare centre,” explains Elisabeth Ries, Head of Youth, Family and Social Affairs.
The new building is being constructed using sustainable timber construction methods. The 2,637 m² gross floor area of the two-storey building offers space for innovative architecture. “Two interlocking cubes with central atriums create a bright, friendly atmosphere and combine quality of stay with functionality. The outdoor facilities are designed to be age-appropriate, with natural areas playing a central role,” says Daniel F. Ulrich, Head of Planning and Construction.
In addition to solid wood construction, recycled concrete, geothermal energy and photovoltaic systems are also used. “The Grünewaldstrasse daycare center not only sets standards in terms of modern childcare, but also in terms of ecological construction. We are proud to be able to implement this project once again with great commitment and responsibility,” emphasizes Ralf Schekira, Managing Director of WBG KOMMUNAL GmbH.
The project costs amount to around 13.87 million euros. Despite the dramatic setback caused by the fire, the original plans were retained in order to save costs.
